TECH DUO HONORED FOR ACID RAIN RESEARCH

Two members of the Virginia Tech entomology department have developed a new method to measure acid rain in the Shenandoah National Park.

Reese Voshell and Stephen Hiner designed a system for sampling park streams that uses aquatic insects as the indicators of environmental health.

Voshell, an associate professor, and Hiner, a lab specialist, were given certificates of appreciation by the Park Service - the first awards given outside the agency to academics.

The Tech researchers collected samples over two years to provide a starting point for further monitoring of the park's streams. A third year was required to compile the information and write a manual.

Voshell said there does not appear to be any dramatic effects from acid precipitation in the park compared with what has been found in the Northeastern United States.
