LAWYER, RETIREE APPLY TO JOIN SCHOOL BOARD

With the filing deadline less than a week away, two people have applied for the two seats on the Roanoke School Board with terms that begin July 1.

The applicants are Emanuel Edwards, a lawyer, and Lewis Peery, a retired Postal Service worker.

The seats are held by William White and Sallye Coleman, whose terms end June 30.

White, who has been on the board for five years, is running for City Council in the May election and won't seek a new term. Coleman has been a board member for six years.

Edwards, 37, is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary Law School.

He is a former staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of the Roanoke Valley and a former teacher at the Beaumont Learning Center.

Edwards has been active in several civic and community service organizations.

Peery, 69, who has worked with the city's Neighborhood Partnership since it was established a decade ago, is a former equal employment opportunity counselor with the Postal Service. He also is a former employee of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem.

He has also served on the city's Personnel and Employment Practices Commission that hears grievances by city workers.

Peery was named Roanoke's citizen of the year in 1987 for his community service and volunteer work. He lost a bid for City Council in 1984.

He is a graduate of the Christiansburg Industrial Institute.

Under a procedure that was adopted several years ago to make the procedure more open, council announces pending vacancies on the board and invites applications.

The deadline is Monday. Forms may be obtained in the city clerk's office in the Municipal Building.

After reviewing the applications, council holds public interviews with up to three applicants for each seat. The interviews will be on April 12.

The appointments will be made in May.
