TRASH BURNER TO BE BUILT, DESPITE PROTESTS

The Prince William County Board of Supervisors has agreed to buy about 50 acres south of Interstate 66 to build a regional trash burner, despite citizen opposition to the proposal.

Solid Waste Division Chief Thomas Smith said the size of the facility would depend on how many jurisdictions participate.

The unanimous decision came after two hours of testimony from opponents who charged that the waste-to-energy facility would be an environmental hazard and would discourage recycling because it required a fixed amount of daily trash to operate.
