RELIGION BRIEFS

\ HOLY LAND SLIDES will be shown free March 18 and April 1, Sundays at 2 p.m., at Melrose Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) The first session at the church at 4807 Cove Road N.W. will survey Israel and the second will focus on Jerusalem.

\ COLUMBIA BIBLE COLLEGE'S AMBASSADOR CHOIR will perform free Monday at 7 p.m. at Faith Alliance Church, 7505 Barrens Road in the Hollins area.

\ HIGH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH'S Woman's Day is scheduled Bibbs Sunday with the Rev. Yvonne Jones Bibbs of Richmond preaching at the 10:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. services. Bibbs is assistant pastor of Sixth Baptist Church. In 1980 she became the first black woman ordained among Virginia Baptists.

\ THE REV. METZ T. COKER has been pastor of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church for 38 years. He will be honored Sunday at a 3:30 p.m. service at which the Rev. Donald Johnson of Court Street Baptist in Lynchburg will preach.

\ A FUND-RAISING RALLY for fuel assistance is scheduled March 18 at 4 p.m. at Sweet Union Baptist Church.

\ TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH, Buchanan, will commission James and Elizabeth Hancock, Pamela Wiegandt and Jan Litton as Stephen Ministries volunteers Monday night at 7. Bishop A. Heath Light will officiate. Stephen Ministries is an intensive ecumenical program in which volunteers are trained in pastoral care for their communities.

\ FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, HOLLINS, will be host to the Virginia Mass Choir of Richmond Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

\ THE SOUTHEAST CHORALE of Washington will sing March 18 at 3 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, 1502 Staunton Ave. N.W.

\ A SPAGHETTI-DINNER BENEFIT is scheduled March 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Troutville Town Hall under sponsorship of a group at Troutville Baptist Church.

\ DISCARDED BUT USABLE FURNITURE is wanted by Roanoke Area Ministries. Wendy Moore, RAM director, said if such furniture is put out for special Roanoke City pickup and designated for RAM, it will be transported to the ecumenical relief agency's center at 820 Campbell Ave. S.W. Moore said RAM wishes not only to help the destitute but also to reduce space in the regional landfill. It cannot pick up articles from homes, however.

\ JIM FORINGER, minister of Edgewood Christian Church for two years until his resignation several months ago, has begun a new fellowship in his home at 3760 Meadowlark Road S.W. Foringer, who came to Roanoke from Pennsylvania in 1987, said the new group "will emphasize the ministry of all believers and that we're not the only Christians but rather Christians only." \ THE LIBERATED WAILING WALL, a Jews for Jesus traveling evangelistic team, will be at Rainbow Forest Baptist Church Wednesday at 7 p.m. The teams seek to win Jews to Christianity. The church is at 3485 Rainbow Forest Drive in the Blue Ridge area.

\ THE REV. KIRK LASHLEY has begun his work as executive director of the Roanoke Valley Association of 71 Southern Baptist congregations. He has come from Danville. Lashley and his wife, Barbara, will be welcomed at a reception at the Baptist Children's Home and Family Services dining room March 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.

\ DAVID E. WOLFE, coordinator of pastoral care at Lewis-Gale Hospital, has been certified as a fellow in the College of Chaplains. Members of the professional group must be seminary graduates, have gained experience in a clinical residency and been on another job for at least a year. Several volunteers assist Wolfe in ministering to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff.
