\ DISCARDED BUT USABLE FURNITURE is wanted by Roanoke Area Ministries. Wendy Moore, RAM director, said if such furniture is put out for special Roanoke City pickup and designated for RAM, it will be transported to the ecumenical relief agency's center at 820 Campbell Ave. S.W. Moore said RAM wishes not only to help the destitute but also to reduce space in the regional landfill. It cannot pick up articles from homes, however.

\ LENTEN CHORAL VESPERS are scheduled Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church. The Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary Choir of Columbia., S.C., will perform at Brandon Avenue and Grandin Road Southwest. Offering is taken.

\ CHRIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., is continuing its Wednesday night Lenten fellowship and education programs through April 4. They begin at 7:15 p.m. with a choice of discussions on "The Cosmic Christ," Christian ethics or English church music. To attend a $2.50 meal at 6:30, or for child care, call 343-0159 by the preceding Sunday.

\ JIM FORINGER, minister of Edgewood Christian Church for two years until his resignation several months ago, has begun a new fellowship in his home at 3760 Meadowlark Road S.W. Foringer, who came to Roanoke from Pennsylvania in 1987, said the new group "will emphasize the ministry of all believers and that we're not the only Christians but rather Christians only." \ INCREASING YOUR SELF ESTEEM will be the theme of a five-class series starting March 20 at First Divine Science Church, 5000 Carriage Drive S.W. The $25 course will be led by the Rev. Maurita Wiggins, pastor, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Call 774-5512.

\ PARENTING BY GRACE, a seminar led by Roanoke pediatrician Dr. Douglas Pierce, is scheduled March 25 at 7 p.m. at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, 4165 Colonial S.W. Call 774-2084 to register.

\ AN INTERFAITH MUSICAL WORK, "Avodath Hakodesh," will be presented twice this month by the Sanctuary Choir of Calvary Baptist Church. Directed by Helen Robertson, the 50-voice choir will sing the "sacred service" suggested by Judaism on March 18 for the centennial celebration of Temple Emmanuel Reform congregation. The following Sunday the choir will be at its home church at 608 Campbell Ave. S.W. Both concerts will be at 5 p.m.

\ ELIZABETHTOWN CONCERT CHOIR from Elizabethtown, Pa., will perform tonight at 7:30 at Central Church of the Brethren, 416 Church Ave. in downtown Roanoke.

\ FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH in downtown Roanoke currently has three members volunteering service in Third World countries. David Loomis and Doug Turner are constructing buildings on hurricane-scarred St. Vincent's Island. Dr. Fuller Robinson is giving free dental service in Ghana, West Africa.

\ LENA BEASON, will become director of the Grandin Court Baptist Weekday Early Education Program next year. Beason currently directs the preschool of St. James Episcopal Church. The Grandin Court program is accepting registration. For more information call 774-1684.

\ AN ANNUAL SUMMER AUCTION AND HIKE sponsored by Antioch Church of the Brethren sent $15,000 worth of needed livestock to the destitute in Haiti. Heifer Project International arranged the donation. Other money went to the Monte Christe agricultural program in the Dominican Republic.

Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church also is helping Haiti through a "twinning project" in which individuals are matched to supply needs.

\ HIGH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH'S Woman's Day is scheduled Sunday with the Rev. Yvonne Jones Bibbs of Richmond preaching at the 10:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. services. Bibbs is assistant pastor of Sixth Baptist Church. In 1980 she became the first black woman ordained among Virginia Baptists.

\ THE REV. KIRK LASHLEY has begun his work as executive director of the Roanoke Valley Association of 71 Southern Baptist congregations. He has come from Danville. Lashley and his wife, Barbara, will be welcomed at a reception at the Baptist Children's Home and Family Services dining room March 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.

\ DAVID E. WOLFE, coordinator of pastoral care at Lewis-Gale Hospital, has been certified as a fellow in the College of Chaplains. Members of the professional group must be seminary graduates, have gained experience in a clinical residency and been on another job for at least a year. Several volunteers assist Wolfe in ministering to the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff.
