CANDIDATES MEET FILING DEADLINE

Most of the incumbents in Fincastle, Buchanan and Troutville met Tuesday's filing deadline for seeking seats on the town councils in the May 8 election.

Fincastle, however, will be getting a new mayor.

Meredith Waid, the current mayor, said she is not seeking re-election for personal reasons. "I was on council before I was mayor. I took over as mayor when my son-in-law, Mitch Bowman, didn't have time. I've run three terms after that . . . Now I feel like a need a little bit more time for myself."

Ten people, including seven incumbents, have registered to run for the eight seats available on the Fincastle council. No one, however, has filed to run for mayor. Jeff Bowles is the only councilman not seeking re-election.

The incumbents meeting the filing deadline are Malanie Jones, Helen Morris, R.D. Henderson, John Shaw, Gray Bolton, Virginia Cronise and Cromer Hedrick.

Abe Morris, Peggy Connell and Terry Tucker are newcomers seeking seats on the Fincastle Town Council.

Buchanan Mayor Stull Carson, who was elected mayor in a write-in campaign in the last election, said he "reluctantly" decided to run again this year. "I'm so tired," said Carson, who will serve his fifth term on council if he's re-elected.

Only one Buchanan incumbent, Ralph Eubank, is not seeking re-election. Those who met the filing deadline are Lois Robert, Lottie Burk, Larry McCraw, Curtis Deacon and C.D. Barter.

Marvin Williams, a Presbyterian minister who lives within the town's newly extended boundary area, also is seeking one of the six seats on council.

In Troutville, Councilman Dean Paderick had not filed to seek re-election by Tuesday's deadline.

Other incumbents seeking re-election are Gaynelle Cronk, Dr. Gary Camp, Robert Harris, Bill Rader and Bruce Switzer.

Mayor Jewell Tyndall is seeking a second term as mayor. She filled Harold Wilhelm's unexpired term when he became a member of the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors.
