Connections to start foster-parent training

Connections, a non-profit foster-care agency, is seeking foster parents for school-age children.

The agency pays all of the children's medical and daily living expenses and gives the foster parents a service fee.

Training classes for prospective foster parents will begin March 19. The classes, which deal with positive parenting skills, are held in the evening and are free. Call Sara Dalton at 342-0411 for further information.

Kroger starts program to recycle plastic bags

Kroger has started a pilot recycling program at its Roanoke Valley stores.

Customers may take their plastic grocery bags to any Kroger location, where they will be bundled and sent back to the manufacturer, Sonoco Products Co., to be recycled for a variety of uses.

The Cave Spring and Vinton stores have outdoor recycling bins where the bags may be deposited. All other stores have bins inside near the entrances and checkout areas. The bags should be clean and free of paper or scrap materials.

Nurse at VA hospital wins patient-care award

Patricia M. Teague, a registered nurse at the Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center, has received the Secretary's Hands and Heart Award.

This award is given annually to recognize an employee in each VA medical center whose quality of patient care has been judged exceptional.

Store starts program to recognize volunteers

JCPenney will sponsor a recognition program to support and encourage volunteer service in the Roanoke Valley area.

Eight grants will be awarded to individuals or groups nominated for outstanding volunteer service. The winners will be selected by a panel of representatives from various civic, service and volunteer groups in the community.

Three winners will be awarded Golden Rule awards, bronze sculptures by artist Greg Wyatt. In addition, JCPenney will give $1,000 cash donations to the volunteer organizations served by the winners. The organizations served by the top five finalists each will receive $250 grants.

The program is open to volunteers in Roanoke, Salem and the counties of Roanoke, Botetourt and Craig. Nomination forms may be obtained at the catalog desks of the JCPenney stores at Tanglewood and Valley View malls. The deadline for nominations is April 15. For more information, call Phillip Boggs at 989-4211.

College granted status by nurses' association

The Department of Continuing Education at the College of Health Sciences has received continuing-education approval from the Virginia Nurses' Association. The college has been granted provider status for a two-year period.

Continuing-education programs offered by the college now will offer contact hours approved by the nurses' association instead of continuing-education units. These contact hours will enable nurses to maintain their specialized certifications.
