FAA TIGHTENS MEASURES TO PREVENT DRINKING

The Federal Aviation Administration, responding to accusations it mishandled a tip about drinking by an airline crew, Wednesday announced measures to improve its response in similar situations.

But the agency defended a safety inspector who has been criticized for his role in the episode, and arranged for the transportation secretary to give him an award for his performance.

The new agency measures, officials said, are meant to insure that inspectors take every step to prevent crew members suspected of being intoxicated from flying.
