CLUB SUPPORTS WISHING WELLS

The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke Valley responded to the March 12 Quickline item on spiral wishing wells.

The item said that some owners of these wells donate a small amount to a sponsoring charity, while the distributor pockets the rest of the money.

Tom Hahn secretary of the Kiwanis Club in Roanoke wrote to say his organization has 10 of these wells in area restaurants and retail stores.

"Every penny collected goes to charities in our community . . . We have distributed more than $4,000 to local charities in the past year," Hahn wrote.

Auto recall update

A federal safety agency is intensifying an investigation of electrical fires beneath the dashboards of 1984-1989 Plymouth Voyagers and Dodge Caravans. As many as 1.5 million of the vehicles are involved, the majority of those produced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that it has reports of 86 fires, but no report of any injuries. The agency's investigation is focusing on the portion electrical system near the emergency-brake lever.

In a separate action, the agency announced that General Motors is conducting the first recall by a domestic car maker for an air-bag malfunction.

A miswired crash sensor in some Buick Reattas could delay deployment of the cars' air-bags, which are installed on the driver's side. There have been no reports of injuries related to the defect.

The agency also announced an upgraded investigation involving rear-axle shaft failures in 1984-1988 Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds. As many as 820,000 cars are involved. The safety administration has received 169 complaints from owners of Camaros and Firebirds, alleging 132 accidents and 59 injuries.
