UMW TO PAY $100,000 IN W.VA. STRIKE FINES

The United Mine Workers union has agreed to pay more than $100,000 in fines stemming from illegal strike activity last year at New Beckley Mining Corp., officials said.

The UMW international, UMW District 29 and UMW Local 1895 will pay the fines as part of a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board, which accused union pickets of throwing rocks, threatening undercover agents and firing shots at New Beckley's Raleigh County mine.

New Beckley, which was struck by union miners for not signing the 1988 Bituminous Coal Operators Agreement, closed early this year.

The international will pay $100,000, the district $2,500 and the local $1,000, attorneys for the union and the company said earlier this week.
