HAROLD CRAUN, RETIRED FARMER, DIES AT AGE 77

Harold W. Craun, a retired Roanoke County dairy farmer who held state and national offices, died Wednesday. He was 77 and lived at 3531 Peters Creek Road N.W.

Craun once raised about 100 Holstein dairy cows, 100 sheep and thousands of turkeys on his 450-acre Wippledale Farm, now the North Lakes subdivision.

Recognized as an innovative farmer, he had been president of Virginia Dairymen's Association and of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America.

He was moderator of the Virlina District of the Church of the Brethren, a trustee of Bridgewater College, a life deacon and Sunday school teacher at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren for 50 years and the first administrator of Friendship Manor.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Garst Craun; two daughters, Elaine Newton, Daleville, and Marilyn Wilkerson, Roanoke; and a son, Garland Craun, Bedford.

The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the church. Arrangements are being handled by Oakey's North Chapel.
