BRUMFIELD LEADS CAVS TO VICTORY

In a matchup of killer leadoff men, Greg Brumfield of Lord Botetourt and Kelly Dampeer of Northside, it was to the Cavaliers' advantage that Brumfield had a bat in his hands last.

He used it to crushed John Baker's first pitch of the seventh inning over the center field fence as Lord Botetourt rallied for a 7-6 Blue Ridge District baseball victory at home Thursday.

"The deepest part of the park," Vikings' coach Butch Tyree said. "He's a good hitter. We had to pitch to him, though. You can't afford to take a chance and put somebody on in the seventh inning."

"I was looking fastball," said Brumfield, a senior third baseman. "I always look fastball because I rarely see a curve batting leadoff."

Brumfield, a four-year starter, hit his third homer of the year and eighth of his career. He's stroked seven in the past two seasons.

"I've gone to a new stance and that's helping me," said Brumfield, who went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two scored. "Last year, I went with a wide stance and didn't stride. Now, I'm striding into the ball and using my legs more."

Dampeer, the Vikings shortstop, went 4-for-4 with a home run and three doubles for three RBI and two runs scored.

Northside (1-1, 2-4) had taken a 6-4 lead with five unearned runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Cavs catcher Alan Meador dropped strike three (for the third out) to Baker, then threw wildly over first as two runs scored. Dampeer then crunched a three-run homer.

Lord Botetourt (2-0, 5-2) came back with two runs in the fourth. The second scored when center fielder Mikey Catron and left fielder Steve Bayer let Brumfield's apparently catchable fly ball fall between them.

At Northside, April Young was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Northside an 8-7 Blue Ridge District win against Lord Botetourt. Northside is 3-0 in the district, 5-1 overall.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Shawn Niday and Brian Sowers scored two goals apiece as William Byrd (6-0) downed Lord Botetourt 9-1.
