BLACKS GIVE BUSH RECORD HIGH RATING

After more than a generation of unswerving loyalty to the Democratic Party and its leaders, black Americans have given George Bush the highest level of sustained approval for any Republican president in 30 years, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll and a series of follow-up interviews.

Many blacks make it clear that their approval largely reflects a feeling of relief that Bush has given them no reason to oppose him. Blacks say they find the president a vast improvement over his predecessor, Ronald Reagan.

Fifty-six percent of black Americans in the latest survey said they approved of the job Bush was doing as president. Shortly after the U.S. invasion of Panama in December, 70 percent of blacks said they approved of his work.
