LOCAL AGENCIES STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS

THE ITEM about the influx of volunteerism on the front page of your April 2 morning edition may be true in that area, or it may be a governmental story plant. In a check with many of the major service programs in the Roanoke Valley, not one reported that its phone "had been ringing off the hook" for information about becoming a volunteer.

The League of Older Americans, with several highly visible volunteer programs like Meals on Wheels, transporting seniors for vital services, congregate meals, referrals and outreach visits to homes, Retired Senior Volunteer Program participants, Foster Grandparents, senior employment and long-term care services, etc., is able to provide needed help to many of the frail and elderly throughout the Fifth Planning District. But there is still a large number waiting to receive these benefits when additional volunteers became available.

For those who may be "thumbing through the phone book looking for a place to offer their time," may we suggest that they call (703) 345-0451. We may have just the program for their talent and ability.
