COAL COVERAGE ONE OF FINALISTS

The Roanoke Times & World-News' coverage of the nine-month coal strike in Southwest Virginia was one of three Pulitzer Prize finalists in the general news reporting category.

Staff writers Mary Bishop, Paul Dellinger, Greg Edwards, Doug Pardue, Dwayne Yancey and Tracy Wimmer and former staff writer Chip Jones contributed stories for coverage of the strike of Pittston Coal Group by the United Mine Workers.

Photographers Don Petersen, Wayne Deel, Stephanie Klein and Cindy Pinkston also contributed to the coverage.

This was the second consecutive year the Roanoke Times & World-News has been a Pulitzer finalist.

Last year, Bishop was a finalist for her investigative series of Virginia's pest control industries. Her series prompted legislation that strengthened Virginia's regulation of pesticides and pest-control operators.
