RICHMOND MURDER RATE FIFTH HIGHEST IN COUNTRY

Ninety-eight murders in 1989 gave Richmond the fifth-highest murder rate in the country, behind Washington, Detroit, Atlanta and New Orleans, according to FBI statistics.

Richmond's total last year was one less than the city's number of murders in 1988, for a rate of 44.55 slayings per 100,000 people. The FBI figures were based on a population of about 219,000.

The rates and rankings were calculated by the Richmond Times-Dispatch based on preliminary FBI statistics released last week.
