VIRGINIA BEACH OKS IDEAS FOR LABOR DAY

Recommendations from a biracial citizens' committee that draw a rough road map for the coming Labor Day weekend were approved Monday by the City Council.

Some council members, however, were concerned about the committee's recommendations that traffic be banned on the city's two main oceanfront streets and that a portion of the informal end-of-summer party be moved to Red Wing Park, several miles from the beach.

Last year's informal end-of-summer party ended in riots between young people and police. Damage to area businesses was estimated at $1.2 million.

The coordination committee was appointed by the City Council to plan this year's event, which will be funded by private sources. - Associated Press
