STOLEN NS TRUCK OVERTURNS; FUEL SPILL FAILS TO REACH CREEK

A stolen Norfolk Southern tanker truck overturned on Kessler Mill Road in Salem early today, slightly injuring the driver and spilling 50 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel, authorities said.

The driver, John G. Holdren Jr., 44, of Mountain Avenue, Roanoke, was charged with drunken driving, possession of stolen property, reckless driving and driving after being adjudicated an habitual offender, according to Salem Police Sgt. R.E. Gray. Holdren was being treated at Lewis-Gale Hospital for minor injuries, Gray said.

Gray said the driver of the truck rounded a curve on Kessler Mill Road at about 7:20 a.m., lost control and overturned at the intersection of Garst Street. Although the accident occurred near Mason Creek, none of the fuel spilled into the water, he said.

Police still are investigating the accident to determine where the truck was stolen, he said.
