CITY NO LONGER PLACES `CHILDREN AT PLAY' SIGNS

Q: I would like to have a sign saying "Slow, Children at play" put on my street. How can this be done? - G.D., Roanoke

A: It's no longer done, said Bob Bengtson, Roanoke city traffic engineer.

The reason is saturation, Bengston said, adding that the city can't place the signs for some people who ask and not for others. And if the signs proliferate, "they lose their effectiveness. Pretty soon, people don't pay attention to it at all," he said.

Putting speed bumps in public streets to slow traffic also is not allowed, Bengtson said.

However, you can contact the police department about people operating vehicles in a dangerous manner.

If you wish to have a particular individual charged for reckless driving or speeding, you must have the offending vehicle's tag number, be able to identify the driver of the vehicle and be willing to prosecute, according to a Roanoke City Police Deparment spokesman.

If you prefer to remain anonymous, contact the police department and ask to have your street added to the traffic bureau's list of locations for operating radar.
