FIRED NURSE ELECTED PRACTITIONER OF YEAR

A dialysis nurse who allegedly was fired from her job for her role in union organizing at Fairfax Hospital was honored Sunday as practitioner of the year by the D.C. Nurses Association.

Kathryn Richardson, who has worked as a nurse for 16 years, was nominated by coworkers as medical nurse of the year, a press release issued by the association said. The awards are given for excellence in clinical practice in conjunction with National Nurses' Week.

The National Labor Relations Board recently charged Fairfax Hospital with violating federal labor law in the March firing of Richardson and more than 50 other actions related to the organizing campaign. Hearings on the issue begin May 15 in Fairfax Circuit Court.
