OPPORTUNITIES ESCAPE BUCS

The inability to drive in runners in scoring position cost the Salem Buccaneers another Carolina League baseball game Sunday against Prince William.

The Bucs blew scoring opportunities in the top of the ninth and 10th innings and lost 5-4 when pitcher Mike Pomeranz's 3-2 pitch hit Prince William's Mauricio Zazueta, forcing in the winning run.

In the top of ninth, Salem's Rob Bailey tripled but was left stranded when Cannons' pitcher Bruce Prybylinski got a pop foul and two strikeouts to end the threat.

In the top of 10th, the Bucs had the bases loaded with one out and were unable to drive home a run off Mike Gardella (1-0).

The Cannons started the bottom of the 10th when Pomeranz (2-2) walked Herb Erhardt. Kiki Hernandez reached on a bunt and Jason Bridges drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Pomeranz, whose curveball had worked well earlier, then hit Zazueta to bring in Erhardt with the winning run and give the Cannons a four-game sweep.

The Cannons moved into second place in the Northern Division at 11-14 and extended their winning streak to five. Salem fell to 10-15 and third place.

Salem tied the score at 1 without a hit in the top of the second when Chris Estep and Keith Raisenen lead off with walks and advanced on a fly out by Darwin Kenney. Estep scored on a groundout by Flavio Williams.

In the top of the fifth, the Bucs again tied the score without a hit. With one out, Bailey struck out but took first on a wild pitch. Pitcher Jim Wiley recovered the ball but committed a throwing error and Bailey advanced to third. He scored on Bruce Schreiber's groundout and the score was 2-2.

Prince William reclaimed the lead 4-2 on Erhardt's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the sixth with two out, Art Canestro walks Salem's Keith Raisenen. Darwin Pennye doubled him in. In the Bucs' seventh, Bailey led off with a double to center. He advanced to third on Greg Simms' bunt and scored on Tim Hines' infield single.
