The first is the widening of a one-mile stretch of the road in Radford, where it is called Tyler Avenue. Tyler will go to four lanes from Auburn Avenue to Rock Road.
The $2.1 million project, scheduled for completion by Nov. 15, also includes improvements to Tyler Avenue's intersections with Rock Road and Auburn Avenue.
Rock Road will get a turn lane and a traffic light at the intersection, said Dan Brugh, resident engineer for the state Department of Transportation.
Visibility will be improved at the Auburn intersection, said James H. Hurt Jr., Radford's city engineer.
The other project, scheduled for completion in mid-October, is a new $449,550 sewer line for the Virginia 177 corridor.
The line will serve the rest stop at Interstate 81 and Bethel Elementary School, plus businesses and some homes. The hospital and a new St. Jude's Catholic Church also are planned for the area.
Water lines also will be relocated and street lights added within the city limits, Hurt said.
H.T. Bowling Inc. of Radford is the primary contractor for the projects. Prillaman and Pace of Martinsville is the subcontractor for the sewer project.
Brugh said the work should not have much effect on traffic.
Although the projects are close together, Donald Vernon of Prillaman and Pace said he was confident workers won't be getting in each other's way.
