BUCS' GAMBLE DOESN'T PAY OFF

The Salem Buccaneers were in a gambling mood Monday night, but luck wasn't on their side.

With the score 6-6 and runners on first and third in the seventh inning, Salem went for the delayed double steal.

Armando Romero broke for second with the pitch and stopped between the bases. Tim Hines broke for home as Lynchburg catcher Louis Dorante threw to second. Second baseman Scott Powers gunned down Hines at the plate with a strong throw and the Bucs lost 7-6 in Carolina League baseball.

With the help of three errors, the Bucs jumped on Lynchburg pitcher Pete Estrada for three first inning runs.

Greg Sims led off the game with a single. Bruce Schreiber reached when Lynchburg third baseman Chris Whitehead missed a grounder.

Domingo Merejo followed with a double to left field that scored Sims. Red Sox second baseman Scott Powers then booted Tim Hines' grounder allowing Schreiber to score.

Merejo scored when Lynchburg left fielder Chris Leach dropped Armando Romero's fly ball.

The Red Sox took the lead in the fifth when Chris Whitehead hit a three-run double.

Estrada retired 13 consecutive hitters before hitting the showers after six innings.

Howard Landry took to the mound in the seventh inning and Chris Estep, who had struggled on this road trip, smacked a three-run, pinch-hit home run to pull the Bucs even at 6.

Hines followed with a triple and Romero was walked intentionally. With runners at the corners and two out, the Bucs gambled and lost.

In Lynchburg's half of the seventh inning, Willie Tatum doubled in the game-winner.
