\ Joseph A. Staples, Jr., age 76, of 529 Gladies Street, N.W., died Saturday, May 12, 1990. He was a retired employee of the N & W Railway with 40 years service. He is survived by his wife, Elsie S. Staples; three sons and daughters-in-law, Maynard A. and Sue Staples, Roanoke; Danny W. and Sandra Staples, Roanoke; Larry D. Smith and wife, Denise, Roanoke; one foster son and wife, Melvin O. and Kitty Simmons, Montvale; one daughter and son-in-law, Norma S. and Paul Elliott, Roanoke; two sisters, Dorothy S. Smoot, Roanoke; Hallie S. Leahey, Alabama; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's North Chapel at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 14, with the Rev. Walter L. Wood officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's North Chapel.
