'EVITA' TO KICK OFF MILL MOUNTAIN SEASON

Mill Mountain Theatre will open its 1990-91 season on Oct. 24 with "Evita," the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical about the wife of one-time Argentine dictator Juan Peron.

The main-stage season will continue with an original adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" (Dec. 5-30); Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (Feb. 27-March 17, 1991); a Tom Griffin comedy, "The Boys Next Door" (April 17-May 5); and "Me and My Girl," a musical with book and lyrics by L. Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber and music by Noel Gay (June 26-July 21).

Theatre B, Mill Mountain's smaller stage for experimental works and other out-of-the-mainstream plays, also plans five productions during the season.

Two will be during the second annual Norfolk Southern Festival of New Works: the winning play in Mill Mountain's annual new play contest and another play yet to be selected. There also will be staged readings and round-table readings during the festival.

Festival dates are Jan. 18-Feb. 10.

"T-Bone 'N Weasel" will open May 24 in Theatre B and play through June 9. It is a comedy-drama by Jon Klein about the adventures of two characters as they tour South Carolina while on unauthorized leave from a prison farm where they had been inmates.

"Tom Foolery" will be done in Theatre B Aug. 2-25. It is a revue of the satirical songs of Tom Lehrer.

The fifth Theatre B production will be a "special project" that is yet to be announced, according to Jere Lee Hodgin, Mill Mountain's executive and artistic director.

He said Mill Mountain's 1990-91 season "is as diverse as our audiences" and one of the "strongest" and "most ambitious" ever undertaken by the theater.

Renewals are under way for current season-ticket holders. Season tickets will go on sale to the general public June 15. A number of marketing packages will be available.
