BAILEY HR LIFTS BUCS

Going into Monday night's Carolina League baseball game against the Winston-Salem Spirits, Salem Buccaneers infielder Rob Bailey had hit one home run in 389 at-bats as a professional.

He picked an opportune time to hit his second.

After Glen McNabb walked to start the seventh inning, Bailey blasted a two-run homer to left field off Spirits pitcher Jim Bullinger, breaking up a tie game and sending Salem to a 7-2 victory at Municipal Field.

Bailey, in his second professional season, hit his first homer last season while at Welland (Ontario) of the New York-Penn League.

He had driven the ball to the warning track several times this year but had not hit one out, he said.

"It was really one of those lucky things," Bailey said. "I'm not a guy who's going to hit balls out of the park.

"It was a fastball that was up and inside. I just wanted to make sure I got on top of it and not pop it up."

Bailey, who was inserted into the lineup at shortstop to give Mike Huyler a rest, ignited a four-run seventh inning that took the Bucs (25-43) to a needed victory as they try to generate momentum for the second half of the season.

It also was a severe blow to Winston-Salem's hopes of catching Southern Division-leading Kinston. The Indians (45-23) beat Frederick 3-0 on Monday and hold a two-game lead over the Spirits (43-25) with two games remaining.

The Bucs also may have found ways to help change their fortunes in the second half and erase the memories of a miserable first half.

Stan Fansler pitched a strong game, his second straight, yielding four hits and two runs in five innings. In his last two starts, Fansler has pitched 10 innings and given up two earned runs and seven hits.

Tim McDowell, recently moved from the starting rotation back to middle relief, struck out five in pitching four scoreless innings after Fansler left. McDowell is proving he could be the consistent setup man the Bucs have been searching for all season.

In his last four relief appearances, McDowell has given up just one run in 13 innings.
