BEAR, THELMA V.

Mrs. Thelma Virginia Riddle Bear, died June 22, 1990, at the age of 89, in Wythe County Community Hospital. She was the wife of the late S. M. Bear. Mrs. Bear was born in Johnson City, Tenn., but lived in ATkins, Va. until moving to Kingsport, Tenn. in 1935. Her parents were the late Rev. A. G. Riddle and Anne Shessey Riddle of Virginia. Mrs. Bear was a graduate of Berea College, Berea, Ky. and had a masters degree from Columbia University, New York City. During a thirty year career, she taught in Virginia, Kentucky, Texas and Tennessee. From 1945 until her retirement, she taught high school English in the Kingsport City School System. Mrs. Bear was a member of the First Broad Street Methodist Church where she served in many ways in her earlier years. Since 1988, she lived at Wheatland Hills Retirement Center, Radford, Va. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Theola Bear Clarke of Ellicott City, Md.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with the Rev. Edd Smith and the Rev. Steve Tilley officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Cemetery, Bristol, Va. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
