BILL SEEKS TO RESTORE FOOD-AID PLAN

Warning that failure to act promptly could consign thousands of children to "months of inadequate nutrition," the chairman of the House Select Committee on Hunger introduced a bill Monday to restore benefits to poor women and children who are being dropped from food assistance rolls in 34 states.

"We must not force innocent children to pay the price for inflation," said Rep. Tony Hall, D-Ohio. "We must make this crisis a priority."

The bill would allow states with a surplus under the federal Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program to return that money for use by states that are cutting eligible recipients because of shortages caused by rising food costs and increasing numbers of participants.
