MAIN STREET WIDENING LIKELY TO BEAT DEADLINE

Construction along South Main Street is six months ahead of schedule, said Dan Brugh, resident engineer with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

"Right now, they're within sight of finishing it this calendar year - and we hope they do it," Brugh said.

Still, motorists can expect continued delays as crews finish widening 1.4 miles of the road from three to five lanes. The project is scheduled for completion in July 1991.

About 20,000 cars use South Main Street each day, Brugh said, and there's no way to avoid occasional backups.

Crews have moved most of the utilities, graded much of the site and installed curb and gutter along some sections of road.

If the weather holds, the job could be done by December, he said.
