FIRM PICKED TO STUDY HENRY SCHOOLS PLAN

A Martinsville architectural firm was selected Tuesday by the Henry County Board of Supervisors to scrutinize the public school plan.

The $38,000 contract was unanimously awarded to David Reeves Associates. Reeves' selection was endorsed by the Henry County School Board during a joint meeting of the two boards Tuesday.

According to Henry County Administrator C.Lee Lintecum, 11 bids were received in response to the county's solicitation.

The supervisors voted in March to seek advice on the feasibility of consolidating school facilities. The outcome of the study, which is scheduled for completion Oct. 15, could revamp Henry County school facilities.

Earlier this year school and county officials debated the possible closing of one or more schools because of low enrollment and budget concerns.

An outline of the contract agreement states that a conceptual plan on either modifying existing school buildings or constructing new ones will be developed. Reeves said the firm's recommendation will be based on school population projections and a physical review of buildings, which will help determine capacity. A Richmond-based education specialist, Educational Consulting Services Ltd., has been hired by the architect to consult on the project.
