ROUSING POSTERS WORRY VA. BEACH OFFICIALS

Authorities said today they are trying to trace the source of posters found in New Jersey that encourage violence in Virginia Beach, where rioting last Labor Day caused millions of dollars in damage.

City Manager Aubrey Watts said three posters were found on the campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The posters said "Drop a cop and win $500" and "Burn the Beach in '90."

Last year during the Labor Day weekend here, police and crowds of mostly black youths clashed on the resort city's main beachfront thoroughfare after looting broke out. Hundreds of youths were arrested and more than $1.4 million in damage was reported.

The posters said people should contact their "MOVE area coordinator for details." MOVE, a radical back-to-nature group, was at the center of a May 1985 confrontation with Philadelphia police.

Watts said he did not believe that MOVE was involved in the New Jersey posters, despite the wording.

The posters also said, "Laborfest '90, Virginia Beach, Virginia, We'll Be Back!"

Watts declined to say whether officials had any suspects or to provide any details of the investigation.
