TECH'S ALLEVA WINS RACE IN ITALY

David Alleva, a graduate student at Virginia Tech, said he surprised himself Friday by winning the 20-mile Capri-to-Naples swim the first time he entered.

Alleva took the lead two hours into the race and finished in 6 hours, 57 minutes, 41 seconds. He finished more than eight minutes ahead of defending champion Diego Degano of Argentina.

It was the second long-distance victory for Alleva, who is studying cancer immunology at Virginia Tech. He won a race in Atlantic City, N.J., last year, but said, "I didn't think I could do it" in Italy. - Associated Press
