Gordon, who represented District D for six years on the board, said she has accomplished the goals she set for herself as a board member.
But she is discouraged that parents do not seem outraged about cramped conditions at Christiansburg Primary and Elementary schools, she said.
"Blacksburg is enthusiastic . . . but nobody seems to care in Christiansburg that kids are crammed in," she said Tuesday.
"I am so dumbfounded to find that schools are as crowded as they were in 1984, and nothing seemed to be happening."
Gordon's resignation leaves a second vacancy on the nine-member board. Kimberly Helms resigned last month so she could apply for a teaching position in the school system.
Gordon said she asked for reappointment last year knowing she might not complete a four-year term. She reapplied mainly because she wanted to have influence over Superintendent Harold Dodge's evaluation, she said. "I'm real happy with the superintendent," she said.
School Board Chairman Marty Childress said Gordon was an excellent board member. "I'm going to miss her, quite honestly."
Childress credits Gordon for being instrumental in expanding the elementary art program. Gordon also was a board member who would "give the administration enough leeway to do their job."
Gordon said she is pleased with the "specs" for a new Christiansburg school, but "I think we're six months late, even a year late. I would like to have seen things progress more quickly."
The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will accept applications from District D until July 18 to fill Gordon's unexpired term. The term will end June 30, 1992.
