Intermet Corp., owner of Lynchburg Foundry plants in Radford and Lynchburg, said Thursday it lost $10.4 million last year, primarily because of a restructuring charge of $12.5 million at a Swedish foundry and losses at an Indiana joint venture. The loss compared with net income of $14.5 million a year ago. Sales were $386 million, down 3 percent. In the fourth quarter, Intermet lost $11.6 million, down from net income of $3.2 million; sales were $90 million, down 3 percent.

> Maureen Castern, formerly an engineer at Hayes, Seay, Mattern and Mattern Inc. has started Benchmark Engineering Service Inc., a Roanoke company that will work with community groups, municipalities and industries on environmental problems.

Lady L. Bridals & Mr. L. Tuxedos, a Richmond-based retailer of bridal and formal wear, has opened a speciality department within the Lazarus women's store in downtown Roanoke. The 20-year-old company also operates stores in Colonial Heights, Charlottesville, Newport News, Virginia Beach and Richmond. Peggy Rogers manages the Roanoke shop.

> The Maaco Auto Painting & Bodyworks center at 3030 Preston Ave. N.W. in Roanoke has been purchased by Edward and Carol Lee. Edward Lee was a national sales manager for Midland-Grau, a heavy systems company, and Carol Lee was a travel consultant in Greensboro, N.C.
