EAGLES RULE RVD WRESTLING

Franklin County won its fourth consecutive Roanoke Valley District wrestling title Saturday and the main question was how long this can go on?

With six sophomores earning a trip to the RVD finals for the Eagles, the dynasty might have a long run.

"I don't want to get ahead of myself, so I'll leave it as the future looks bright for the next two years," said Franklin County coach Kris Kahila. "But then a lot can happen."

The Eagles won four individual titles and had 11 finalists in the 13 divisions.

Cave Spring finished second, but the Knights had the most champions with five.

William Fleming, which dominated the district before Franklin County started its run, was last going into the consolation finals. The Colonels pulled up to third despite having only one wrestler in the championship matches.

Now it's on to the Group AAA Northwestern Region in Manassas next weekend. The Eagles have the best shot as a team, though Cave Spring's veteran quality - headed up by seniors Adam Williams (130), Noah Tempkin (135) and Ray Kaczmarek (145) - might be a factor. Between them, the three wrestlers have lost but four times this year, and Williams is the lone unbeaten wrestler in the district.

"The toughest teams for us will be Stonewall Jackson and Woodbridge," said Kahila. "We lost to both of them in dual meets, but tournament wrestling is different [because there are more teams]."

Last year, Williams was unbeaten into the region tournament, but he finished third, lost in the first round of the state tournament and didn't make the consolation round because the wrestler who beat him lost in the next round.

"I'm wrestling better than last year, but it's a very tough region. I'll be up against a wrestler who beat me when I was a sophomore in Jeff Stone of Potomac," said Williams after he beat Isreal Gilbert of Franklin County 16-4.

Tempkin, who has lost only once, struggled for a while against Hasani Menefee, one of the Eagles' sophomores. He led 4-3 after two periods, and won 8-4. Kazmarek pinned Patrick Henry sophomore Kyle McMahon in 3:02.

Pulaski County's Curtis Rollins put on another impressive show at 160 as he ran his record to 23-1 with a 19-7 victory over Patrick Henry's Paul Kelly.

"This is only my second year of wrestling, but I think I've got a shot in the regional," said Rollins, whose only loss was to a wrestler in Kentucky.

Franklin County's most outstanding wrestler is Scott Southall, who has one loss and a tie this year. He got a pin of Patrick Henry's Soukanh Chanthavixay 23 seconds before the end of the match.

"One of my goals is to win the region and the other is to win the state," said Southall, who split four matches in the Group AAA meet a year ago. "I didn't wrestle well this week because my ribs have been bothering me. The only thing I could do at practice was run."

Fleming's only finalist is a good one for the future. Keno Shepherd, a once-beaten sophomore, beat Franklin County sophomore Daniel Worley 8-0.
