PEOPLE IN BUSINESS

BARRY MILLER, an employee of Hercules for 11 years, has been named area supervisor for the reactivation and production of TNT at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant.

Miller's career with Hercules has included work in the safety departments at both the Radford and Sunflower Army Ammunition plants. He also has worked in the TNT and NG areas. He recently started training TNT personnel to be ready for start-up on April 1.

\ ART PRICE, director of parks and recreation for the Town of Christiansburg, has been named coordinator of the new Adopt-a-Spot program "Dare to Care About Christiansburg."

Modeled after the Adopt-a-Highway program, Adopt-a-Spot, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Waste Management, is intended to raise awareness about the environment.

\ TOM SNEAD of Christiansburg, a rocket manufacturing foreman at Radford Army Ammunition Plant, recently won the State Toastmasters Tall Tales Contest in Charlottesville for his topic, "Don't Tell My Wife." Snead has been with Hercules for almost nine years. He has been a member of the Christiansburg Toastmasters Club for the past year.

\ TERRI G. CLARK, a senior at Christiansburg High School, has been given a $1,000 scholarship to attend Western Carolina University in Asheville, N.C., in the fall. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James C. Clark of Christiansburg.

\ CADET CLAYTON HOWARD THOMPSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Root of Blacksburg, was on the second-term honor roll at Fork Union Military Academy in Fort Union, Va.

\ SU CLAUSON of Christiansburg was appointed to a three-year term on the Montgomery County Public Schools special education advisory council.

The Radford chapter of Phi Delta Kappa welcomed 12 new members and two transfer members into its fraternity of professional educators:\ JUDITH CANON ARAMAN and\ BRENDA LYNN WILLIAMS, high-school teachers in Montgomery County;\ ISABEL BERNEY, an instructional supervisor in Pulaski County;\ MOLLY DUNBAR and\ LISA ANN RICHARDSON, graduate students at Radford University;\ MARIE CAROL HURT, ELLEN B. DENNY, ROBERT T. WALL and\ LINDA SUSANA IVES, middle-school teachers in Montgomery County;\ JULIA N. MCBRIDE and\ KATHLEEN R. OSTERHOLM, elementary-school teachers in Montgomery County; and\ SHARON S. SUTTLE, an elementary-school teacher in Pulaski County. Transfer members are\ ALLEN PROFFITT, an education professor at Radford University, and\ LOUISE H. WADE, a counselor at New River Community College.

\ KATIE NICELY, daughter of James and Sonya Nicely of Radford and a junior at DePauw University in Indiana, played the role of Mrs. Olsen in the university's production of "Street Scene" this month. Nicely majors in music and communication.

\ NANCY S. WATERS of Christiansburg was crowned the 1991 Valentine Queen of Preceptor Beta Eta chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She is the group's ways and means chairwoman and a member of the social committee as well as an administrator of Heritage Hall in Blacksburg and western district secretary of the Virginia Health Care Association.

The Virginia Highlands chapter of the American Guild of Organists, an organization of church musicians, held its second annual organ scholarship competition in Powell Hall at Radford University. The winners were awarded 10 free one-hour organ lessons and a course book. The winners are:\ JULIE DOUGHTY and\ TIMOTHY ALAN KIRK of Blacksburg and\ KARI FLORA of Christiansburg.

Area winners in the Wal-Mart Pharmacy "Flu Bug" coloring contest are:\ IRA KLEIN of Blacksburg, first, kindergarten;\ ASHLEY N. SPANGLER of Floyd, third, kindergarten;\ KATIE MCNINNEY of Blacksburg, first, first grade;\ JESSICA EANES of Floyd, second, first grade;\ RICHARD BEAMISH of Blacksburg, third, first grade;\ ABBY COMBS of Floyd, first, second grade;\ JEFFREY CARTER of Floyd, second, second grade;\ STEPHANIE AKERS of Christiansburg, third, second grade;\ REBECCA PETERS of Riner, first, third grade;\ LOGAN SLUSHER of Floyd, second, third grade; and\ ANNIE EMMONS of Floyd, third, third grade. First-place winners received a blue ribbon and $20 gift certificate. Second-place winners received a red ribbon and third-place winners a white ribbon.
