INTERMET CUTS LYNCHBURG FORCE

Intermet Foundries Inc., owner of Lynchburg Foundry, said Friday it laid off 66 workers at its Lower Basin plant because of declining industrial and automotive orders.

The Lynchburg company said the layoffs, effective immediately, will eliminate the second shift at one of the plant's foundries and maintain a single-shift at another operation.

The plant has been operating on three- and four-day schedules for the past three weeks, officials said in a statement. The cutbacks reduce the Lower Basin work force to 617. Employment at the Lynchburg Foundry - which also owns a plant in Radford - remains at 1,691.
