MISS KANSAS WINS 1991 MISS USA TITLE

Miss Kansas, a 21-year-old communications student from Liberal, was named Miss USA 1991 Friday night.

Kelli McCarty, an aerobics instructor and student at Wichita State University, said she hopes to pursue a modeling and acting career while finishing school.

First runner-up was Charlotte Ray, 24, of Voorhees, N.J., and Diane Schock, 25, of Fontana, Calif., was second runner-up.

The crowning of the new Miss USA ended the reign of Carole Gist. She and two other former Miss USAs are involved in a legal dispute with pageant organizers.

The worldwide telecast of the pageant finals, featuring television personalities Dick Clark and Barbara Eden, was dedicated to U.S. armed forces. A patriotic theme was planned throughout, with the singing of the national anthem and other songs such as "Hooray for the USA" and "God Bless the USA."

The winner Friday will represent the United States in the May 17 Miss Universe pageant. - Associated Press
