ALEXANDER LEADS COUGARS

Point guard Kevin Alexander made five of six 3-pointers and all 12 of his free-throw attempts to score 29 points and power Pulaski County past Franklin County 77-74 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' basketball game Friday night.

Alexander, who had five assists, scored 19 of his points in the second half and was 8-of-8 on free throws in the fourth quarter.

Kordy Bernard scored eight points in the first quarter to help the Eagles (1-19, 0-8) get a 19-12 lead. Bernard also added eight points in the second quarter, but Pulaski County scored the last eight points of the half to tie the score at 34.

The Cougars (10-11, 3-5) took the lead early in the second half, and Franklin County never got closer than three. Chris Burns added 15 points, Chris Foster 13 and Perry Beverly 12 - eight in the second quarter - for the Cougars.

Burns also grabbed 10 rebounds, and Pulaski outrebounded the Eagles 35-24.

Bernard finished with 23 points, Kenny Wade 16 and Tim Gill 11 for Franklin County. Wade made three 3-pointers in the final period to help keep his team close.

Brian Woodford had 28 points and Brian Johnson 23 to lead the Golden Eagles.

\ ODACS Group A\ Gateway Christian finally gained control in the fourth quarter and won 62-57 against Great Hope Christian in the semifinals of the Old Dominion Association of Church Schools semifinals.

Forward/center Dan Osbourne led the way with 24 points and 18 rebounds against the taller team from Chesapeake.

Great Hope (13-7) led by about three points throughout until the Crusaders' halfcourt pressure and man-to-man defense cranked up. Gateway (15-7) took its first lead, 53-52, and got the lead for good with 4:30 left in the game.

The Crusaders face Heritage Christian for the title at 4:30 p.m. today.
