NAMES & CHANGES

HENRY B. WYCHE has been promoted to assistant vice president for safety and environmental protection at Norfolk Southern Corp. He joined the company in 1972 as supervisor of environmental engineering. He was promoted to director of environmental and shop engineering in 1985, to director of environmental protection and emergency response in 1988, and to director of safety and environmental protection earlier this year.\ JAMES A. HIXON has been promoted to assistant vice president and tax counsel for Norfolk Southern Corp. He joined the railroad's Roanoke office in 1985 as assistant tax counsel. He was promoted to general tax attorney in 1986 and transferred to Norfolk in 1990.

AWARDS

\ FRANK P. TOTA, superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools, was given the Leadership Award by the Coalition of Virginia Urban School Divisions.

\ RICHARD ALLEY, RICHARD CARTER and MICHAEL HANKS have been named Fire Fighters of the Year by the Roanoke Fire Fighters Association. The three men rescued an 87-year-old blind woman from her smoke-filled home by carrying her out a second floor window, over a porch roof and down a ladder.

\ SHERERTZ FRANKLIN CRAWFORD SHAFFNER, INC. has won the Printing Industries of Virginia Award of Excellence. The award is for innovative design, complexity of design and quality of printing of a company announcement.\ ADAM Y. JONES of Jones Associates in Roanoke designed the announcement, and PROGRESS PRINTING in Lynchburg printed it.

\ DEL. A. VICTOR THOMAS of Roanoke has been awarded the Matthew Fontaine Maury Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Museum of Natural History for his role in shaping Virginia's policies on endangered species.

Two manufacturing engineers from ITT Electro-Optical Products Division in Roanoke have received honors for a jointly prepared technical publication and presentation on advancements in night vision technology using Taguchi methodology. TIMOTHY L. REED, manager of statistical methods, and WARREN D. VRESCAK, senior operations engineer, received an Award for Technical Excellence from the American Suppliers Institute and top honors from their company at the Annual ITT Defense Taguchi Symposium. Reed has also received an award for outstanding achievement in promoting Taguchi methodology within ITT.

\ STANLEY R. NAVAS has been named one of America's 10 Outstanding Business Leaders by Northwood Institute, a business management college. Navas is president of Concrete Pipe & Products Co., Inc., which is headquartered in Richmond with a branch in Roanoke.

\ THE HICKORY PRINTING GROUP has won several awards from The Printing Industries of the Carolinas, a trade association based in Charlotte, N.C. The company, which is based in Hickory, N.C., has offices in Roanoke and Pearisburg. Hickory won the Unijax/Epes Memorial Award for Best Large Printer's Self-Advertising; the Hoechst Celanese Small Press Superior Image Award; nine Best of Category awards; seven Special Judges awards; and 15 Awards of Excellence.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has honored the following outstanding disadvantaged business enterprises involved in state road building:\ S&S PAVING CO., INC. of Copper Hill received the DBE Hauler Award;\ LMC SAFETY BARRICADE CORP. of Roanoke received the DBE Supplier Award;\ GREGORY SEEDING & LANDSCAPING, INC. of Pulaski received the Constructor Award; \ A.R. COFFEY & SONS, INC. of Buchanan received the Prime Contractors Award;\ LANFORD BROTHERS CO., INC. of Roanoke received the Specialty Contractor Award.

\ RANDOLPH-MACON WOMAN'S COLLEGE has won several awards in the District III competition of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. The awards, presented for a series of publications and videos produced by the college, are: in the student recruitment category, a Grand Award and two special merit awards; a Grand Award in the fund raising publication category; a Grand Award in the institutional publications category; in the films and tapes category, a Grand Award and a Special Merit Award; three Excellence Awards in the design for print category. The college also has won a silver award in the 1990 Mercury Awards, an international competition for print, video and audio materials.

\ REYNOLDS G. LYNCH III has been promoted to assistant vice president at Scott & Stringfellow Investment Corp. in Roanoke.

\ PETER B. MILWARD of the Roanoke office of J.C. Bradford & Co. has been named to the company's Senior Advisory Council.\ LINDSEY QUESINBERRY, also of the Roanoke office, has been named to the company's Leadership Council.

HOSPITALITY

\ ANN S. LEVAN has been named vice president of sales for Sugar Bay Plantation Resort, a luxury resort under development on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The national sales office is in Roanoke.

\ PEARL FU, director of concierge services at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood, has been named its employee of the year.

SERVICES\ DAVID W. UNDERWOOD has joined John T. Morgan Roofing & Sheet Metal Co., Inc. as a senior estimator.

\ MICHAEL W. HOLDREN has been promoted to assistant vice president of development and support at Datacare, Inc.
