WILLIAMS BOOSTS TERPS

Matt Roe scored 28 points, including 18 in the second half, and Walt Williams provided the inspiration that helped Maryland rally for an 86-78 ACC basketball victory against Wake Forest on Saturday.

Maryland (15-11 overall, 4-8 in the ACC) clinched a winning season. Robert Siler scored 18 points and Randolph Childress and Chris King each had 17 for Wake Forest (15-9, 6-6).

Maryland, which trailed by 10 early in the second half and 72-70 with 4:43 left, took the lead for good on a three-point play by Cedric Lewis with 4:10 remaining.

After Wake Forest closed to 77-74, Williams made a 3-pointer and the Demon Deacons never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

Williams, playing in his first game since breaking his right leg Jan. 12, scored seven points and gave the Terrapins a much-needed boost when he came off the bench with 13:23 left in the game.

Down 52-42, the Terrapins began their comeback behind the shooting of Roe, a senior playing his final home game. Roe scored 11 points in an 18-8 surge that made it 60-60 with 12:50 remaining. The tying basket came on a layup by Williams.

Vince Broadnax scored on a follow shot to give Maryland its first lead, 67-66, with 8:41 remaining.

Wake Forest scored the first eight points of the game and got 11 points apiece from Siler and Childress in taking a 48-40 halftime lead.
