9TH DISTRICT HOLDING FREE TAX WORKSHOPS

Five federal income tax workshops will be sponsored March 1-2 by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, for 9th Congressional District residents who want free, confidential assistance on 1990 tax returns.

"The designation of the Persian Gulf as a combat zone provides a number of federal tax relief provisions for taxpayers serving in the Middle East, and their spouses," Boucher said. "Families of 9th District servicemen and women are urged to attend."

March 1 tax workshops will be held at 10 a.m. in Dalton-Cantrell Hall, Mountain Empire Community College in Big Stone Gap; and 3 p.m. in Tazewell Hall, Southwest Virginia Community College near Richlands.

On March 2, the workshops will be 10 a.m. in the main instructional building (Room 220) at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon; 1 p.m., meeting rooms 2 and 3, Wytheville Community College; and 4 p.m., Martin Hall student lounge, New River Community College.

Internal Revenue Service representatives will be available to review individual tax returns and address any concerns taxpayers might have, Boucher said. Free publications answering the most frequently asked questions will be on hand.

Spouses and family members acting on behalf of taxpayers serving in Operation Desert Storm can telephone the IRS toll-free for additional information at 1-800-829-1040.
