HOSPITAL AIDE FIRED FOR ALLEGED PATIENT ABUSE

Eastern State Hospital officials have fired an aide for physical abuse of a patient, the third such dismissal in five weeks.

An aide employed since 1988 was fired Thursday for allegedly abusing a patient Feb. 5. The incident happened in a building where patients between ages 17 and 65 are treated for conditions including schizophrenia to paranoia, said Eastern State's assistant director, Martin Kline.

Charges against the fired employee have not been ruled out but are not being considered, Kline said. Kline said the investigation, which included interviews of the patient and staff, showed there was no drug or alcohol use by the employee involved. - Associated Press
