GAS TAX REFUND NO LONGER OFFERED

Boaters no longer will be able to collect a 16-cent refund on each gallon of fuel they buy for their craft.

The 1990 General Assembly quietly eliminated the refund for pleasure boaters, effective this season. The refund remains available to commercial boaters.

In the past, recreational boaters who kept records and filed the proper form were given a refund because the tax money was seen as a road use fee, not a boating fee.

That changed when Gov. Douglas Wilder promoted the idea of eliminating the recreational refund with the money, an estimated $171,000 this year, going to a number of projects and agencies, including the Marine Resources Commission for saltwater fishery work.
