At Blacksburg, freshman Gwen Doyle scored 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in leading the Cardinals to a Metro Conference victory over the Lady Hokies before 279 spectators at Cassell Coliseum.

The victory gives Louisville (22-8, 9-5) third place in the conference.

Virginia Tech (12-14, 8-6) is tied four fourth place with Southern Mississippi.

Tech will play Southern Mississippi in the first round of the conference Tournament on Monday in Louisville. The Cardinals will play Memphis State.

Nell Knox added 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Tuonisia Turner added 12 points, including two 3-point goals, and Kelly Rose had 10 points for Louisville.

Lisa Griffith, a sophomore, led Virginia Tech with 21 points and seven rebounds, and Sue Logsdon put in 10 points.

Tech was trying for a school-record ninth conference victory.

Tech shot 33.9 percent and has shot less than 40 percent in six of its past seven games.
