GRETNA SHOCKS BASSETT 82-68

Troy Hall led five players in double-figure scoring as sixth-seeded Gretna stunned No. 3 Bassett 82-68 on Wednesday night in the first round of the Piedmont District boys' basketball tournament.

The Hawks (11-11) will play No. 2 seed Martinsville, a 62-43 winner against Dan River, in a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Bassett.

Hall scored 12 points as Gretna took a 20-13 lead at the end of one quarter. Bassett (15-6) got its offense going in the second quarter, but still couldn't contain Hall, who made two 3-pointers. The Bengals trailed 41-31 at the half.

Steve Womack took over the scoring burden for the Hawks in the second half as he put in 13 of his 20 points. Harold Jones scored 16, Roddy Locust 11 and Eric Waller 10.

Dytanyon Norman led Bassett with 21 points.

In the other semifinal, Troy Brandon scored 18 points and Seandell Meadows added 12 as the Bulldogs, ranked fifth in Group AA, moved on. Martinsville led 36-23 at the half and put the game away with a 20-11 run in the third.

Cornell Fitzgerald scored a game-high 23 for Dan River (8-14).

Glenvar (13-8) switched to a tougher press in the third quarter to take control on the way to a 76-39 victory against visiting Lexington (9-10).

Glenvar got a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds from Scott Wagstaff, 14 points from Chad Willis, 12 points and 11 rebounds from Frank Thomas and 12 points from Scott Highberger. Adam Harrell made eight assists. The Highlanders outrebounded the Scarlet Hurricane 45-26.

Ethan Machado had 10 points to lead Lexington, which shot 42 percent to Glenvar's 52 percent.

In the semifinals Friday at Natural Bridge, Glenvar will play a 7 p.m. game against Covington.

The top-seeded Cougars (16-6) blew a 26-point lead but came through down the stretch to take a 69-65 victory against visiting Craig County.

Covington led 36-10 early in the second quarter, then lost intensity. The Rockets (7-14) road a game-high 32-point effort by David McPherson to fight back into the game.

Craig County made it 56-56 with 4:55 left in the game. The score was knotted two more times, but Neal Dressler's basket with 2:27 left gave Covington the lead for good.

Down 67-65, the Rockets had a chance to tie in the closing seconds but turned over the ball. Adaryl Twitty, who led Covington with 24 points, sealed the victory with two free throws with two seconds left.

In another opening-round game, Keswick Phillips scored 18, Tim Williams added 17 points and Tyler McCuen 15 as Bath County rolled Natural Bridge 83-57 in Hot Springs.

The Chargers (13-6) jumped to 27-12 lead and kept going. Robert Thompson scored 18 to lead Natural Bridge (8-12).

In Friday's 8:30 p.m. semifinal at Natural Bridge, Bath County will play James River, a 58-42 winner against visiting Rockbridge.

James River got 22 points and 13 rebounds from Melvin Christian and 11 points and nine assists from Ryan Shotwell. The game was close through three quarters, with the Knights leading 29-25 at halftime and 40-36 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, James River (15-7) went to a man-to-man defense and held the Rebels to six points.

Brook Coffey led Rockbridge with 12 points.

The tournament championship is at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
