YWCA names officers, new board members

Marilyn Donato has been re-elected to a second as president of the board of directors of the YWCA of Roanoke Valley.

Other officers are Kelly McDaniel Whitney, president-elect; Terry Morrison, vice president for finance; Nancy Brock, vice president for public relations; Barbara Duerk, recording secretary; Beulah Dabney, corresponding secretary; and Maurita Wiggins, treasurer.

The YWCA membership also elected the following women to serve on the board for the 1991-93 term: Dabney, Whitney, Wiggins, Mary S. Allen, Frances Arend, Genevieve Camden, Elizabeth Ann Hill, Norma Stephenson and Gay Thompson. Do$rothea Gaulden was elected to fill an unexpired term on the board.

Support group to help people with depression

The Roanoke Valley Depressive Disorders Association will hold its first meeting March 7 at 7 p.m. in the Brody Room of the Roanoke Public Library, 706 S. Jefferson St.

Sponsored by the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley, the group is for those who have depressive illnesses and their families. There is no cost to attend the meetings.

The group's purpose is to increase understanding of depressive illnesses and eliminate the stigma associated with them through education and support.

The group will continue to meet the first Thursday of each month at the above time and location. For more information, call 344-0931.

Shamrock sale to help dystrophy association

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is sponsoring its annual shamrock sale to raise funds.

Through March 17, various restaurants, bars, and grocery and convenience stores will have cardboard shamrocks for sale for $1. Patrons may write their names or a message on the shamrocks. This year, Roanoke-area residents are encouraged to show support for U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf by buying shamrocks in their honor.

All proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. For more information, call 772-3237.

Shedd School collects yard sale donations

The Shedd Early Learning Center is preparing for its annual fund-raising yard sale on April 13.

Anyone with items to donate for the sale may drop them off at the school, 3379 Colonial Ave. S.W., or call 989-3739 before April 10 to arrange for pickup.

College display honors black medical pioneers

In celebration of Black History Month, the College of Health Sciences has assembled a display honoring black Americans who have made significant contributions in the field of medicine.

The display is open to the public through Friday in the college's sixth-floor Learning Resources Center, at 920 S. Jefferson St. The exhibit will be open tonight until 9 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Pioneers in the medical field and current contributors, national and local, will be featured. Those from the Roanoke Valley include:

Dr. Anthony Remson - private-practice internist and vice president of the Salem branch of the NAACP.

Shelvey Bratcher-Porter - registered nurse, president of the Roanoke Valley Black Nurses' Association and assistant professor of nursing at Radford University's program at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Conrad Claytor - physician and adjunct faculty member at the College of Health Sciences.

Miriam Smith - founder of the nurses aide program at Burrell Memorial Hospital in 1957 and founder of the school of practical nursing at Lucy Addison High School in 1958. She died in 1989.

Ex-Roanoke teacher travels to Soviet Union

> Former Roanoke teacher Debbie Bergeron left recently for Moscow, Siberia and Hungary as a member of the Citizen Ambassador Program Education of Gifted Children Delegation.

She is spending four days in each place as part of the program.

Bergeron, a gifted-program teacher and coordinator at a Reynoldsburg, Ohio, elementary school, will meet with 19 other gifted education specialists in a series of programs.

Bergeron graduated from Cave Spring High School and received a degree in early childhood education from Virginia Tech. She taught for 11 years in Roanoke public schools. Her parents, Kenneth and Mildred Spraker, live in Wythe County. - Southwest bureau

Grandin Court Baptist enrolling preschoolers

The Grandin Court Baptist Preschool at 2660 Brambleton Ave. S.W. is registering for the 1991-92 school year.

The school operates daily from 9 a.m. until noon September through May. A two-day program for 3-year-olds costs $45 per month and a three-day program for 4-year-olds costs $55 per month.

Retired teacher named to state AARP position

> Jerald R. White has been named state coordinator for retired teachers by the executive board of the American Association of Retired Persons.

White will serve as a liaison between the AARP and the state and local Retired Teachers associations, promote membership in the National Retired Teacher Association Division of AARP and promote AARP's programs and services.

Before his appointment, White served as president of the Roanoke City, District P and Virginia retired teachers associations.

White retired in 1978 as assistant superintendent of the Culpeper County public schools. Previously, he served at the former Jefferson High School in the positions of band director, assistant principal and principal.

Cave Spring lodge elects 1991 officers

Richard A. Deyerle has been elected worshipful master 1991 of the Cave Spring Masonic Lodge No. 230.

Other officers are William D. Urquhart, senior warden; Hartley R. Gaston, junior warden; John B. Ferguson, senior deacon; Jerry M. Garrett, junior deacon; Donald L. Garlock, treasurer; Robert E. Hadley, secretary; Robert E. Slaydon, chaplain; Samuel G. Simpson, tyler; Charles G. Steele III, senior steward; and Stanley Johnson, junior steward.

Counseling center board names officers

The Pastoral Counseling Center of Roanoke Valley board of directors has named William Broadhurst as its new president.

Other officers are Charles Bray, vice president; George Kegley, secretary; and Ira Peters, treasurer.

The center is ecumenically supported and offers personal counseling on a sliding-scale basis. It has been established for more than 15 years in quarters at Second Presbyterian Church.
