The Rev. Luther D. Shumate, age 79, passed away Saturday, March 2, 1991, at his home, Route 3, Galax, Va. He was born February 7, 1912, in Independence, Va. to Marshall and Betty Poe Shumate. He was a retired Baptist minister having served pastorates for 54 years in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Independence, Va. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Edna Hanks Shumate of the home; one son, Sharoll Shumate, Westport, Conn.; a daughter, Gertrude Hubbard, Boomer, N.C.; one brother, Leo Shumate, Galax, Va.; one sister, Beulah Eadie, Grand Rapids, Mich.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Hubbard, Mr. Sharoll Shumate, and the Rev. Fred Jennings officiating. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va. and will be taken to the church 30 minutes preceding the service to lie in state. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday night from 7:00 until 9:00. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
