NEWCOMERS ARE FOND OF ED SHAMY

SINCE MOVING here in January from the Philadelphia area, I have been heartily worn out from getting used to this, that and the other thing about living in Virginia. I am doing my best to learn to speak the language, and I am eager to become part of my new community.

Just the same, I have to tell you that I look forward to Ed Shamy's column every morning as if it was necessary to life or something. When my sister told me he was from Pennsylvania, my heart suffered a little pang of either homesickness or mal de mer. I read him first, "The Far Side" second, Ann Landers and my horoscope next, but just because they're on the other side of the page; then I feel I can take on the war.

All I can say is what a man! Congratulations on having him working for you. We at my house are right fond of him. RENA FIELDING MARTINSVILLE
