PLANNED PLANT ALREADY ATTRACTING JOB SEEKERS

The Virginia Employment Commission said Thursday its Martinsville office has received about 1,500 applications for 25 production jobs expected next spring when the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. opens a window-frame plant there.

The large number of applicants is not unexpected because of the layoffs in the region's textile and furniture industries, the VEC's John Curran said. He said the VEC will screen the applications and narrow the list to about 200.

If sales grow as expected, the company has projected employment will reach 300 in several years. The Toledo, Ohio, company confirmed the plans about two weeks ago. - Staff report
